    2020 Dubai

Expo 2020 Dubai is the World Expo that will be held in the United Arab Emirates from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

The Expo will join millions of people in the United Arab Emirates for “the greatest show in the world” over the course of the 170 years of World Expo history, celebrating man’s intelligence and accomplishments under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.”

The six months from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022 will be a unique opportunity to participate in an unprecedented event. A global event with something for everyone, the Expo will amaze visitors with 60 events each day for the duration of 185 days, showcasing the best in music, technology, creativity, and culture while 200 F&B points of sale with famous chefs and food from all corners of the globe will also be present.

Expo 2020 will be an infinite journey to discover the Pavilions of the 200 participants – including 192 nations, multilateral organizations, companies, and educational institutions – joined together to highlight real solutions to the most urgent global challenges.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Expo 2020 Dubai was postponed one year from its official scheduled opening on October 22, 2020, but it has kept the same name, logo, and 2020 date even though it will take place this year from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

It is the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East and 25 million visitors are expected to attend the event; 70% of these will come from abroad and not from the United Arab Emirates, above all from ME.NA.SA (Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia regions).

Dubai, the most connected city in the world.

In ancient times, the Arabic word for Dubai was Al Wasl, which means “connection,” thereby testifying to the strategic importance of its geographic location as a crossroads between people from the entire region. The Expo 2020 site has a surface area of 4.38 km2 and is located in the Dubai South District, near the Al Maktoum International Airport and is around one hour from two other important international airports: Dubai International and Abu Dhabi International. From Italy the United Arab Emirates is approximately a 6-hour plane ride; it is at the center of an area that can host two-thirds of the world’s population within an 8-hour plane flight. Every main city in the world offers direct flights to Dubai. Italy is connected to Dubai with direct flights from Rome, Milan, Venice, and Bologna.

Dubai is at the crossroads of the world, geographically and culturally.

The United Arab Emirates has become a global hub for companies, tourism, and, more and more, idea sharing. It serves as the headquarters for over 200 countries that work together, exchange ideas, and create partnerships to consolidate the country’s position as a contemporary center for innovation and knowledge.

On the occasion of Expo Dubai, the new Metro Route 2020 line will be inaugurated; starting from Dubai Marina, it will transport 46,000 passengers each hour in less than 16 minutes.

What is
      the Expo

The World Expos are grandiose international events that over the course of six months offer visitors and participants a unique cultural, educational, and commercial experience.

The Expos foster international dialogue between citizens, countries, and institutions on a relevant theme of universal interest and contribute to strengthening cooperation among people.

Modernity, technological development, transforming our habitat and cities, attention to the environment, and cultural dialogue between the participating countries all outline the fundamental character that each World Expo must possess.

Since the mid-19th century these goals have been translated into constructions that have become famous, expositions of art open to international dialogue, radical urban change, and exceptional opportunities for invention and communication.

Role of the Host Country

Organized by the nation that won the competition, the Expo takes place on an Expo Site that is specifically equipped and offers an opportunity for encounter and sharing between countries, invited through diplomatic channels.

The Host Country has the chance to show the world its best technological innovations, national productions, and cultural traditions, but also to consolidate international relations in numerous sectors.

History
    of the Expos

Presided over by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort, the first World Expo, better known as the “Great Exhibition,” was held in 1851 inside the Crystal Palace, Hyde Park.

It achieved such great success and resonance that other events of this kind were organized shortly afterwards in Dublin (1853), New York (1853), and Paris (1889) near the Champs-Elysées, where the Eiffel Tower was erected as a symbol of the fair. During the second half of the 19th century, modern fairs began to distinguish themselves across Europe. Industrial events were held to promote products by a certain company or by various sectors of a country. The Expos in Berlin (1877, leather goods), London (1924, British goods), and Paris (1947, home furniture) were very important. The United States began holding fairs dedicated to commemorating pivotal national historical events, and major World Expos were organized to showcase a very vast range of cutting-edge products, processes, and technologies. Now the United Arab Emirates will host a World Expo for the first time. The previous Expo was held in Milan in 2015 and the upcoming one will take place in Osaka in 2025.

San Marino’s participation at the World Expos

The Republic of San Marino began participating in exhibitions and fairs in 1861, the year it attended the Esposizione Generale Artistica in Florence, but the first true World Expo it participated in was the one held in Paris in 1878, thanks to the insistence of the Duca De Bruc, the Republic’s representative to the French government, who argued how advantageous it could be for San Marino, above all for political reasons despite its small size. De Bruc personally paid for all the necessary expenses in order to persuade the San Marino government to participate.

San Marino also took part in the 1889 Paris Expo, upon request of its business and trade attaché in France, Baron Morin.

The French government also officially invited San Marino to the most famous and important World Expo in Paris in 1900, where it participated with its own Pavilion, located at the foot of the south pillar of the Eiffel Tower, which recreated the new Palazzo Pubblico inaugurated in 1894.

After World War II San Marino took part, with its own pavilions, in the World Expos of Brussels in 1958 and of Lisbon in 1998. At the Lisbon event, dedicated to the theme of ocean and environmental conservation, San Marino presented the plaster cast of the Aulocetus sammarinensis fin whale fossil discovered in 1897 in a stone quarry as well as its national flag that flew in space during the Space Shuttle STS-91 mission in 1998.

San Marino did not take part in the following Expos in “Hannover 2000” and “Saragozza 2008” yet it organized a “San Marino Week,” in collaboration with the Italian Pavilion, holding conferences to promote tourism and inviting the Nazionale della Federazione Balestrieri Sammarinesi, which performed at both Expos.

San Marino also took part in Expo 2010 Shanghai: “Better City, Better Life”; with its 74 million visitors it was the greatest Expo ever held. The San Marino Pavilion with its surface area of 324 m2 had as its theme “San Marino: The City-State” and the characteristic element was the recreation of the Statua della Libertà which was donated to China and is now on display as the “main element” at the Expo Museum of Shanghai/Pudong.

San Marino also participated at Expo 2015 Milan: “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” The San Marino Pavilion was located in the “Bio-Mediterranean” cluster and had a surface area of 125 m2 with its theme “San Marino: Small Enough To Be Big”; it presented its 6 food-farming chains joined under the “Consorzio Terra di San Marino.”

Bureau International des Expositions

B.I.E.

The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) is the intergovernmental organization that establishes the Expo objectives and regulates the organization, attendance, and progress while guaranteeing its quality in full respect of international guidelines. Established on November 22, 1928 with an International Convention, its headquarters is in Paris and is composed of 168 member states, including the Republic of San Marino since 2004, all represented by one or more delegates. Any State can become a member of the BIE, by adhering to the 1928 Convention and its subsequent protocols while providing its fundamental contribution to future Expos. San Marino became a BIE member state in 2004 and was part of the Culture and Information Commission from 2011 to 2016 and member of the Regulations Commission from 2016 to 2019.

The BIE San Marino delegate since 2004 has been Ambassador Mauro Maiani.

The Expos regulated by the BIE are classified into two categories:

World Expos:

• Frequency: every 5 years lasting 6 months

• Participants must build their own pavilions and the exposition site has no size limit

• The theme is general with secondary themes

International Expos:

• Frequency: during the intervals between two World Expos and lasting 3 months

• Organizers must build all the pavilions for the participants

• The exposition site has a maximum surface area of 25 hectares

• Theme is specialized

Moreover, the BIE also organizes Expos specialized in Horticulture and Floriculture and the Design Triennale in Milan.
