news The visit of Maher Nasser, Commissioner General of the United Nations to the San Marino pavilion emphasizes the active contribution of our Country to the 2030 Agenda 24 January 2022

The thematic week of Expo 2020 Dubai dedicated to the Global Goals has just ended up. This event has been inaugurated in the imposing setting of Al Wasl Plaza by the opening speech of Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, who illustrated the shared project for peace and prosperity on the planet, based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), projected in the most impressive dome of the world.

The core of the 2030 Agenda concerns the need for urgent action to

counteract growing poverty and inequality, as well as the need for greater responsibility in addressing the climate emergency. In her speech,

Amina J Mohammed has in fact highlighted how the world has not yet

fully embraced the pace and scope of change. For this reason

the primary objective of the thematic week dedicated to the Global Goals at Expo 2020 Dubai, was to promote the SDGs in order to raise people's awareness and deliver on the promise of the Decade of Action.

In this context, the visit to the San Marino Pavilion by Maher Nasser,

-Commissioner General of the United Nations- welcomed by the

Commissioner General Filippo Francini took place. Following the guided tour of the exhibition space created by the volunteers, the two Commissioners have then discussed the activities and initiatives of the United Nations, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between all countries to jointly pursue the Global Goals, regardless of their size. In this regard, the meeting has highlighted the ambitious program towards 2030 that our small Republic nurtures in favor of a sustainable and multilateral development, consolidating the relations between San Marino and the United Nations.

Commissioner General Filippo Francini comments: "I thank Commissioner General Maher Nasser for visiting our pavilion and having the opportunity to discuss universal issues of primary importance. The Global

Goals Week, launched for the first time at Expo Dubai, -apart from New York-, was a unique opportunity for the country to showcase our active contribution to the program, thanks to the commitment of a working group which has tackled all the activities to be carried out to pursue the 17 SDGs".

Indeed, inside the San Marino pavilion, in the third area of the interactive table, visitors can find a multimedia tablet dedicated to the Global Goals where the concrete measures taken to promote change are illustrated.

Among the interventions already activated, concerning the third goal dedicated to Health and Wellbeing, the Republic of San Marino boasts a universal health care system that is free for all its citizens, which even in Covid times has demonstrated readiness and resilience thanks to an effective vaccination campaign.

Regarding the fifth goal of "Gender Equality", San Marino has established  the Authority for Equal Opportunity since 2008, which guarantees equality between men and women and provides help for victims of violence.

This service consists of a 24/7 active telephone line and an app that facilitates the request for help in emergency situations.

The seventh objective dedicated to "Affordable and Clean Energy" has seen the Republic involved since 2020 thanks to the activation of numerous photovoltaic panels in the territory, reaching 4.4% of total energy production. Thanks to its small size, San Marino is fostering the real opportunity to become one of the first countries in the world with zero carbon emissions.

Finally, in order to pursue the thirteenth Goal related to "Climate Change", San Marino has already implemented measures to combat climate change

-starting from education- through ad hoc school programs to sensitize the individual and the community towards a sustainable and plastic free lifestyle.
