Expanding Horizons is the name of the design for the Pavilion of the Republic of San Marino at Expo 2025 Osaka. It was signed by a team of students from the University of the Republic of San Marino.

They are Giada Cianca, Andrea Monticelli, Mattia Pompili and Elena Scarpellini, the students from the University of San Marino who ranked first.

San Marino, July 3, 2024 – The award ceremony for the projects of the Pavilion of the Republic of San Marino for Expo Osaka 2025 was held this morning at the Aula Magna of the University of the Republic of San Marino in the former Monastery of Santa Chiara. Present at the ceremony were the Commissioner General of the Government for the Osaka World Expo 2025 Filippo Francini, the Director General of the University of the Republic of San Marino Laura Gobbi, and Riccardo Varini Director and Structured Professor of the Degree Course in Design.

Prizes were awarded to three of the projects that participated in the concept development phase: the winning team, with the Expanding Horizons project, is composed of Giada Cianca, Andrea Monticelli, Mattia Pompili and Elena Scarpellini; runners-up, students Davide Passatempi, Rachele Turci, Rebecca Ugolini; in third place, the project curated by Roberta D’Onofrio, Sara Manfredotti and Erica Tentoni.

Present at the ceremony were tutors who supervised the students Pietro Garofalo, Matteo Giustozzi, Nunzia Ponsillo and science leaders Elena Brigi, Massimo Brignoni, Giorgio Dall’Osso, Riccardo Varini.

Filippo Francini: ‘The added value and qualifying element of the University’s participation and contribution to the Expo project lies in the freshness that its students bring. The organizers have also recognized this for us. The new and unconditioned vision of the young students led to the result, which we hoped for, of stimulating their creativity even in the presence of a container of small dimensions – that of the space we will occupy in Osaka – but with lofty goals, those of the United Nations 2030 Agenda that the Japanese Universal Exposition asked the Participating Countries to decline. I thank the professors, tutors and the whole team that accompanied the students. To the students who took up this challenge go my sincerest congratulations.’

Laura Gobbi: ‘After Expo Dubai 2020 this is the second collaboration between the University and the Commissariat, it represents a great privilege for us, I thank those who wanted and promoted it. I am sure for our young people it was an important opportunity, in the school world these projects, those in which one is confronted with real appointments that have enormous visibility, the theoretical ones to be translated into reality, are called reality tasks. While measuring themselves against such a big challenge, our students proved themselves up to it.’

Riccardo Varini: ‘The students have shown that they have the culture of know-how, they have been able to put their own stamp on the projects. For the students, the tutors and for all of us this is a beautiful opportunity for prestige, experience and visibility.’
